It's been a long time and my poor little blog has been neglected. It is summertime now and I am really going to try to be a better blogger.
A lot has happened since my last post. The main reason I have not been on here is a good one - I got married!

The wedding was wonderful, but it took quite a bit of energy, time, and planning!

I will post some more pics of our wedding in the upcoming weeks.

Now that summer is here, I have a few goals:

1. Learn to embroider
2. Dust off the old sewing machine and freshen up the sewing skills
3. Master the hula-hoop (Yes, I want to be a pro with the hula-hoop. It was so much fun when I was a kid and sadly my hula-hoop skills are gone!)
4. Send out our wedding thank-you cards
5. Start planning our European vacation for next summer!
6. Get to the DMV to change my license to reflect my new married name
7. Visit some California Missions

Highlights from 2009:

1. Mr. W and I got engaged!
2. I turned 34 and Mr. W turned 32.
3. Found out how really bad it is when your dog gets sprayed by a skunk.
4. Found out how really bad it is when your dog gets out of the yard and manages to roam the neighborhood for over an hour...thankfully, we found her and she wasn't hurt.
5. Moved from our lovely little apartment in South Pasadena to a beautiful old house in San Gabriel.
6. Decided to go back to school and enrolled at University of La Verne.
7. Mr. W was published in an education journal!
8. We re-discovered the joy of bicycling. Mr. W, my sister, and my brother-in-law conspired to get me a vintage 3-speed.
9. Mr. W grew pumpkins, beans, and peas in the backyard.
10. My Etsy store continued to grow!

Looking forward to planning our wedding and finding new adventures in 2010!

Merry Christmas Eve!!!

I've got some last-minute wrapping to do, and some baking to get done for some special friends. Other than that, I'm just planning to enjoy the holiday with family and friends.

My Etsy shop will be closed till Jan. 4 and I will have new stuff added to the store!

I wanted to post two of my favorite Christmas tunes--these always give me a cozy, warm feeling, and put me in the holiday spirit.

Summer is officially over for Mr. W and me. We had a wonderful summer-- filling up our Sundays with TMC movies at the Drive-In, Wednesday's movie night at the park, a mini vacation to Julian, CA, bike rides, and last but not least a very nice 4 days in Leo Carrillo State Park with the ones that I love.

A few things I discovered from this summer vacation:
1. How much I love bike riding and how much I really missed it.
2. Mr. W and I need to take more trips to the beach.
3. How much I missed camping at Leo Carrillo with my family and how we will once again make camping a yearly event.
4. I think we found a wedding venue!

Now that Mr. W is back in school our weeknights until Christmas vacation will be filled with a 9:30 "curfew"--and a lot of planning of lunches and work outfits!

Introducing....my brand new bike... well new to me. We scored this vintage beauty on craigslist. It is a 1978 Raleigh Sports bicycle and it was made in Nottingham in October 78. I have not taken her out for a real ride yet, I wanted to give her a cleaning and tomorrow she is going to be fitted with a basket! As far as I know everything is original except for the new tires we just put on it.

Mr. W did a great job in finding me a bike. He found the listing on Tuesday morning and had the bike at our house by the time I got home from work at 4:30. His partners-in-crime were none other than my sis and brother-in-law. Sis rode along as a "consultant" specializing in my taste and brother-in-law provided the muscle and transportation.

Friday Happiness/Shop update

Happy Friday Everyone!!! It has been a long hot week here in Southern California and it doesn't look like it's going to cool down anytime soon. If you have any ideas on how to stay cool please let me know...we live in an old house and do not have central air. :(

Movies in the park

Mr. W and I had a wonderful evening in East Los Angeles watching movies in the park with my sis and her hubby. It was a beautiful cool night filled with yummy popcorn and carmel candy apples, and graced by happy people. The movie of the night was Transformers. My favorite part of the whole night was not so much the movie, but spending time with the people I love most and watching kids play in the sprinklers at 9:30pm--fully dressed! I was tempted to run through the sprinklers but I did not want to ride home in wet clothes....I guess that's the grown up in me talking.

I can't wait until next Wednesday's movie night!

Cookies!!!

For the past three nights I have been baking cookies for Mr. W's students. Mr. W's mom gave me the recipe, but if you type in "cake mix cookies" you will get a lot of different recipes online.

CAKE MIX COOKIES

Ingredients:

1 Box of cake mix
2 eggs
1/2 cup oil
1 teaspoon of vanilla (for flavor if using white or yellow cake mix)
mini M&M's
peanut M&M's (I did not measure the M & Ms, I just put in as much as I wanted)

One box of cake mix makes about 3 dozen cookies.

Directions:

Heat oven at 350 degrees. Lightly spray non-stick cooking spray. Partially mix the cake mix, eggs, oil, and vanilla. After a few stirs add in the M & M's. Once cookie dough is well mixed, use a teaspoon to scoop out cookie dough and put on a cookie about an inch apart. Cook for 10 minutes--if you cook them longer, the cookies come out crispy.

Mike Ness

It's been awhile since I lasted posted. I am happy to be back. I came across Mike Ness in a peta2 add and just had to post it (I tried to stream the video add, but I am not that savvy with blogging).

You would look at Mike Ness and probably not think, "That guy's a vegetarian."

Mr. W and I are not vegetarians, but we've been trying to cut back on eating meat. We also try to make sure that the meat we do eat is organic and free-range instead of factory-farmed.

People may not realize that meat production contributes more to climate change than cars do!

Six Word Saturday

Missing an hour. Thankful she's safe.

Ms. Lucy disappeared yesterday while Mr. W and I were out running errands. My mom called me when she realized that Lucy had escaped from the backyard. My heart sunk and I immediately thought the worst. Mr. W remained calm and took charge of the situation. We drove up and down our streets and called her name...with no luck.

It was getting late and would be dark soon and I all I could think was, she is going to be cold and all alone. After about 45 minutes of driving the streets near our house, we decided to check the streets in the opposite direction and sure enough, walking in the middle of a 5 way intersection is Lucy looking confused and dirty. I was so happy to see her and could not wait to have her back in my arms. Mr. W pulled his car right in front of on coming traffic to save her from getting hit.

(Mr. W's note: It wasn't quite as daring as it sounds--the other car was going pretty slow, and it was slowing up for a stop sign. No, wait--what am I saying--it was going 75 mph! Driven by an escaped convict! And I pulled in front and grabbed Lucy with one hand while I steered with the other! Yeah--that's how it happened!)

Anyway, he's my hero.

PostSecret Sunday #2

I smiled inside when I saw this PostSecret this morning, for many that know me well know I love jury duty service. I don't like the waiting around part, but I enjoy doing my civic duty and being on a case (especially criminal cases--a civil case is a little less exciting). I even had the pleasure of being in a jury pool with Duckie from Pretty in Pink! So whoever sent this secret in, know that you are not alone. :)

Four years ago today, Lucy came into my life, the result of an "unplanned pregnancy." Her mother Annie was my dog for two wonderful years, and Lucy was the only puppy to survive Annie's litter. Unfortunately, eight weeks after Lucy was born, Annie got out of the house and was hit by a car. She died from her injuries. Thankfully, Lucy was old enough to be weaned from her mother, and she has been an important part of our lives for these four years.

She also inherited some of her mom's traits--her wiry, wheaten coat (Annie was a Cairn terrier; the daddy dog is a Chihuahua), her love of chasing squirrels and birds, her mischief and love of play, her watchdog alertness, and most importantly, her affectionate nature.

I ended up being a little productive in my craft room this past weekend and filled up the shelving in my craft room with some supplies and inspiration. I still need to find a small desk to put my sewing machine on and re-paint an old bookshelf. I went to a couple of thrift stores over the weekend to try to find a desk and managed to pick up some pretty cool things with Mr. W..... some vintage hankies, books, a beaded cardigan, Members Only jacket (for Mr. W), a whole cookie jar filled with vintage matches, but no desk. I guess I am going to have to try again this weekend :).

Etsy Shop Update and Birthday Wishes

Happy Saturday!!! I was up bright and early this morning and was able to post 4 new rings in the Pretty Perch Etsy shop. Now I need to get my butt in gear and clean up my craft room! We have been in our new home for two weeks and I still have a million boxes to unpack.

Happy Birthday to my hard working brother! He is spending his day in Colorado hard at work and hopefully we will all see him soon.

Excited about moving but a little sad too...

1.Only having to walk a block to Trader Joe's
2. Walking to Nicole's for Sunday brunch
3. Walking to Firefly for romantic dinners with Mr. W
4. Living 1/2 a mile away from the Gold line
5. Having the privilege of cooking on the vintage O'Keefe and Merritt stove
6. Walking Ms. Lucy and Gizmo in the Arroyo Seco
7. This apt was the first place me and Mr. W rented together
8. Walking to Farmer's Market on Thursdays
9. Being so close to the public library
10. Having a little cozy apartment.

10 things I am going to love about our new house:
1. I will actually have a little craft room!!!
2. Gizmo, Blacktop, and Ms. Lucy will have a backyard to relax and play in.
3. We have a cellar....need I say more
4.We are walking distance away from our favorite bakery Fortune Bakery
5. We now will have space for a vegetable garden
6. The telephone room--a tiny little room with a built in desktop and just enough room for a chair
7. The art deco mirrors and tile in the bathroom (all original)
8. We have an orange tree that was from the original orange groves
9. Walking distance away from the San Gabriel Mission
10. A fireplace for those cold days

Hearts...

Spent the morning getting ready for Valentine's Day and whipped up this heart garland in like 10 minutes. I used some construction paper, turquoise string, and little red puff balls. Above the garland I taped a bunch construction paper hearts in pink and red. I wanted to make the apt. look festive for Mr. W when he comes home from work today.

What do you guys think (sorry the pics are so dark)?

I also worked on Valentine's cards and gifts for the special people in my life.

Cupcakes and Mail

Today was one of those days when I just wanted to come home from work and go straight to bed, but to my surprise Mr. W brought home some of these delicious treats for me. They were delicious! I love him, he is always thinking about me and he does things just because. I'm a pretty lucky girl.
As if the cupcakes were not enough I had the great surprise of receiving these awesomely cute Valentine's Day cards I ordered on etsy from Anna Rae Palmer. I love all the cards, I want to keep them all to myself.
This turned out to be a pretty nice evening.

Chili Anyone?

Had a nice relaxing day today with Mr. W. One of our New Year resolutions was to eat less red meat, so today we had a chance to make vegetarian chili beans and corn bread (did not make the corn bread from scratch, made Trader Joe's cornbread in a box). Now we have enough chili beans to last us a few days!

Vegetarian Chili Beans:

24 oz Meatless Ground (2 packs of Yves Meatless Ground)
2 (15oz) cans of tomato sauce
2 (15oz) cans of kidney beans with liquid
2 (15oz) cans of black beans with liquid
1 c. diced onion
2 med. tomatoes, chopped
1 med. red pepper
6 pearl tomatoes, chopped
2 cups water
4 tsp. salt
2 tsp. black pepper
2 T. chili powder (if want it less hot use 1 T.)
1 tsp. Cajun spice

In a frying pan brown and crumble meatless ground. Once meatless ground is browned put it into a large pot and mix in all the other ingredients. Cook over low heat stirring every 20 mins. or so, for 2.5 to 3 hours.

MLK Day

Had a pretty low-key day today. Mr. W has come down with a cold and I spent all day tending to him and making sure that he got plenty of rest. Also had some time to catch up on some cleaning and laundry....how can two people have so much laundry?
To my surprise UPS did not have today off and I received a set of Jadite Fire King vases that I won on ebay! They are so lovely and are perfect for the vintage Jadite collection that I am slowly starting.

I'm getting married! I am so happy to announce that Mr. W and I are engaged. I could not be happier. It was a very sweet proposal that started out with a little scavenger hunt and ended with happy tears.

Happy New Year everyone! I got to spend a wonderful New Year's Eve with Mr. W and we rang in the new year in the comfort of our little apt :). We also had a delicious dinner (with wine!) at Firefly Bistro. I am excited about 2009 and all the unknown adventures this year will bring.

As you can see, Blacktop had plenty of presents to open on Christmas!

Mr. W bought me presents from two of my favorite Etsy shops: Joo Sweetie and Marmee Craft. This ornament flew (under cover of night, of course) to California from Joo Sweetie's shop:
